The Music that Makes this World
The songs you should listen to when my novel comes out!
When I was writing this story, I wanted a very “chill” vibe. I never wanted this story to be a dramatic and intense fantasy adventure. While a portion of the story is a bit intense, the main emotion of the story was "homesickness”.
Think back to when you were coming home from a long and tiring vacation. You’re practically falling asleep in your pajamas, a blanket covering yourself and a bag of chips tossed to the side on top of some backpack.
You wake up when you feel the car making familiar turns. You sit up and rub your eyes, then blink around at your neighborhood, looking up to find the moon. Your car pulls into your garage. You’re up, grabbing your suitcase without the energy to talk. Your parents unlock the front door, and the second you step inside your body melts.
You’re ready to fall asleep onto the floor. You don’t even open your eyes as you walk around, dragging your body to your room. Then you collapse onto your bed with a sigh, and fall asleep.
That exact feeling is what I was trying to convey every time I was writing. And I wanted to share a few songs that I personally feel help you get into that mood and mindset when reading this story once it’s available to read in full!
Taeyeon Four Seasons. Even if you’re not a fan of kpop I recommend giving this a listen. Don’t get the translation or anything, just let it run and close your eyes. What emotion do you feel? What do you think about? I was listening to this song the entire second draft, and a good chunk of the third draft.
I didn’t listen to this song at all when writing the major drafts. While wondering what to watch, my brother told me to watch an anime called “Kaiju no. 8”. I went along with it, he mentioned that the ending song was really relaxing and he loved listening to it. So I gave it a shot. Dang I was hooked! This song encapsulates what I was feeling when writing this story, so it seems fitting to listen to it while reading.
Trigun Stampede - also known as “Best Anime Ever”. No joke, I am so deeply in love with this anime I need everyone I know to watch it. I cannot describe how soothing this song feels. It just makes you want to lean back in your chair and give a sigh of relief. I made everyone around me watch this, and I play this song at least twice a week.
I consider this next song the main theme of this entire series. On the surface, this is a simple song about being in love and being ashamed of your past mistakes. That alone already makes it a perfect fit for this story. But! There’s an underlying layer. See, this song has two versions. A Japanese and an English, sung by the same artist. But the songs aren’t translations of each other. They’re two entirely different lyrics. When you look at the lyrics of both and compare them you get a better picture. This is a homosexual relationship, where both are too scared to reveal their true selves to the world, and hurt each other in the process of neglecting their love. It hurts.
I found this song because of work. It would play constantly overhead, and I found it endearingly relatable. (I’ll share a story about what I mean soon) But I find it soothing with a cute little message. Especially when compared to the last song. Be yourself, and be chill about it.
Know of any songs that fit the vibes that these last ones gave off? If so, please sent them my way, I’d love to expand upon this list in a meaningful way.
