How I went from Loving Warriors, to hating it!

My favorite character was reduced to nothing

How it Began

I was in elementary school. Maybe 3rd grade or 4th grade. I hated free reading time.

It’s not that I disliked reading. No, I liked reading too much. My supposed reading level was lower than my peers. Let me explain.

My first language was actually Spanish, I was placed in ELL(English Language Learner). During the normal English period of classes, I would be pulled from my peers, placed in another room, and learn English along with others who didn’t have it as their first language.

Problem lies here- I learned English too quickly. Which is a bummer, I could’ve learned so many languages back then if I had tried. But, even though I had tested out of ELL quickly, I found it fun and didn’t want to leave. But, my classmates who weren’t in ELL, thought it was a sign that I still didn’t know English that well. And since I was quiet, my teachers thought the same thing.

So during reading time what did I get?

Picture books.

I couldn’t stand picture books. The pictures were nice. The stories were usually nice too. But I finished them too quickly! While my other classmates of “similar reading level” were struggling to sound out the word “believe”, I was standing up to grab a new book every five minutes.

I needed something with more substance!

I walked over to the chapter books section. A few kids scolded me. They didn’t mean any harm, but they told me I needed a higher reading level to be there. I angrily said I could read them, and started looking around for something.

The first few books I found were interesting, but still not what I was looking for. Even if I didn’t know what that was quite yet. I kept going through, until our worlds collided.

Warriors

The covers have since changed since these ones came out, but I hate the new ones so I’m going to stick with the old ones I liked anyway.

That’s when it started. A little kid looking for books with more substance. I picked up “Midnight”, no idea what I was in for. I started off the reading confused, but as I kept going, I just kept getting more and more sucked in. Each new book, I rushed to grab the copy. When the library didn’t have it, I would beg my mom at Barnes and Nobles to buy it for me.
